If you love a big vocal, a huge chorus and a room full of people who aren’t remotely shy about singing along, Celine Dion: A Celebration at Ironworks Studios Brighton was a very easy night to get swept up in. This cabaret style tribute celebrated one of the biggest voices in pop with live performances, stories from Celine’s remarkable career and a Divas Disco afterwards that kept the party going.
The live vocalists never tried to replace Celine Dion, and let’s be honest, who could? Instead, they celebrated her music with the audience with plenty of heart and enthusiasm. The evening took you through some of the songs that have made Celine such a huge name around the world, including The Power of Love, Because You Loved Me, It’s All Coming Back to Me Now and Think Twice.
The live performances came from Harlequeens, Aneesa Chaudhry, Miss Disney and more, with each bringing their own style to Celine’s enormous catalogue. Nobody is going to rival Celine Dion vocally here, and the show doesn’t pretend otherwise. That’s an impossible task when you’re dealing with a singer famous for those enormous, soaring vocals. The singers harmonised beautifully, sang with passion and encouraged the audience to sing along, and that counted for a lot.
By the time the biggest songs arrived, Ironworks Studios felt like a Celine Dion karaoke party. People sing loudly, clap along and cheer after the big moments. Many audience members clearly knew every single word and were more than happy to prove it and the fun atmosphere came from that shared love of the songs. Miss Disney’s rendition of All By Myself was a highlight, sung beautifully.
Between the performances, the show also tells the story of Celine’s extraordinary career. Her journey begins in Quebec before taking her onto the world stage, where she becomes one of the biggest selling recording artists of all time. It gives the evening a little more substance than simply running through a greatest hits playlist, reminding you just how much ground Celine covers across her career.
Of course, no Celine celebration would feel complete without My Heart Will Go On. The Titanic classic got an ear drum shattering sing along. It’s one of those songs that has become far bigger than its original film soundtrack appearance, and hearing a room full of people belt it out together is part of the fun.
Then, once the main show finishes, there was no immediate rush for the doors because the celebrations continued with a Divas Disco in the bar, turning the evening into a full on celebration of some of pop’s biggest female stars. Celine remained at the heart of it, but her hits were joined by Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Cher, Tina Turner, Madonna, Beyoncé and more.
It’s a fitting way to finish because Celine Dion: A Celebration isn’t really about trying to find someone who can stand in Celine’s shoes. Nobody can. It’s about enjoying the songs, celebrating the career and having a good night with other fans.
If you’re heading to Ironworks Studios expecting a note perfect recreation of a Celine Dion concert, this wasn’t that. What you get instead is a warm, enthusiastic tribute where the audience becomes a huge part of the show. The vocals may vary, but the affection for Celine’s music never does.
Add the cabaret performances, career story, huge singalong moments and the Divas Disco afterwards, and you’ve got a fun night that feels much more like a celebration than a serious tribute act. And when the whole room is singing Celine at the top of its lungs, that’s rather hard not to enjoy.
