Tucked away in Hoxton, Avora is a theatrical immersive experience that combines cocktails, storytelling and a touch of the surreal.

From the moment you step inside, the staff slip into character so effortlessly you almost forget you’re in East London. You’re eased into the storyline with a briefing from the “scientists” before you don your Avora jumpsuits and embark on your mission.

There’s a definite sense of anticipation in the air, helped along by the actors who keep the momentum going with jokes and charisma. It’s clear they’re committed to their roles and it makes a big difference to the atmosphere.

The drinks are where Avora really shines. Each cocktail is beautifully presented, with colours and garnishes that wouldn’t look out of place in a high-end bar. They’re not just pretty to look at either; they’re genuinely delicious.

You get three cocktails included in the experience and there’s a clever use of unusual ingredients and flavour combinations that keep things interesting. One minute you’re sipping on something bright and colour changing and the next, it’s a creamy creation in an edible cup.

Avora takes place in several rooms with the fun plot moving you from one to the next. The set design is impressive with vibrant foliage, glowing mushrooms and otherworldly lighting that gives the space a sense of being somewhere far from reality.

The plot itself is a mix of eco-conscious themes and sci-fi movie fun with a touch of mystery thrown in.

The way the lighting, sound and staging shift creates a real sense of moving through different worlds. One moment you’re in a lush, glowing forest, the next you’re in a darker, more mysterious environment. It’s an impressive bit of theatrical staging and makes the journey feel more dynamic.

The immersive side of things is fun, but at times you might feel more like a spectator than an active participant. There’s a lot of standing or sitting and watching the story unfold, with occasional moments where you’re drawn in to interact. It’s very entertaining but if you’re expecting a completely hands-on experience from start to finish, you might find yourself wanting a bit more involvement.

That said, the performers are engaging enough that you’re never bored. They keep the energy levels up and make even the quieter moments feel part of the bigger adventure.

From a practical point of view, the event feels well organised. Arrival is straightforward, the team are welcoming and you’re never left wondering what you’re meant to be doing. The space isn’t huge, but it’s used cleverly so it doesn’t feel cramped. Groups move through together, which adds to the fun, especially if you’re there with friends or as part of a celebration.

Avora’s combination of performance and high-quality cocktails makes it stand out from more standard bars or theatre shows. It’s a fun, immersive experience where you can step into another world for a couple of hours.
