Review: Kinky Boots

Theatre Royal Brighton – 25th – 29th March 2025

Kinky Boots struts into Theatre Royal Brighton, sequins sparkling and heels high. This feel-good musical, based on a true story, takes the audience on a journey of self-discovery, acceptance and some seriously impressive footwear. With a catchy score by Cyndi Lauper and a script by Harvey Fierstein, it’s no surprise the show became such a huge hit on Broadway and the West End.

At the heart of the story is Charlie Price, played with warmth and charm by Dan Partridge. He finds himself reluctantly taking over his late father’s struggling shoe factory, a business he has little interest in saving. Enter Lola, a fierce and fabulous drag queen who might just inspire the answer, a new line of sturdy yet glamorous boots designed for drag performers.

Newtion Matthews is sensational as Lola, balancing confidence, humour and vulnerability with ease. His voice is nothing short of extraordinary, delivering powerhouse moments with a gorgeously gritty vocal that brings the house down.

Lola is played by Strictly Come Dancing star Johannes Radebe in some other towns but it’s hard to imagine anyone playing her better than Newtion.

Lola’s Angels, a group of high-kicking, scene-stealing drag performers, dazzle with their jaw-dropping dance moves and razor-sharp comic timing. Every time they hit the stage, they bring a new burst of energy, wowing the crowd with their charisma and stunning choreography.

On the factory floor, Courtney Bowman as Lauren is a standout. Her awkward crush on Charlie is played to hilarious effect and she delivers one of the show’s best songs, The History of Wrong Guys with perfect comedic timing and a knockout voice.

Scott Paige as George also deserves a mention for his warm, witty performance and rich singing voice.

Musically, Kinky Boots delivers in every way. From the emotional depth of Not My Father’s Son to the high-energy Sex Is In The Heel, every number hits the mark. The final number, Raise You Up/Just Be, sends the audience out on a high, clapping along and grinning from ear to ear.

The staging is cleverly designed, shifting seamlessly between the struggling factory, the glitzy club and the glamorous catwalk of Milan. Costumes are a feast for the eyes, particularly the titular thigh-high boots.

Beyond the glitter and glamour, the show carries a heartfelt message about embracing who you are and stepping outside your comfort zone. Kinky Boots isn’t just about fabulous footwear. It’s about finding your passion, standing tall and lifting others up along the way.
