Theatre Royal Brighton – Tuesday 11th – Saturday 15th March 2025

The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe takes the stage at the Theatre Royal Brighton this week with a spectacular production that really brings the enchanting world of Narnia to life.

From the moment the curtain opens, the audience is transported into a world of magic, wonder and adventure.
Lucy, Edmund, Susan and Peter swap wartime Britain for an amazing journey into a snow-covered land filled with wonder. In this enchanted world, they befriend the kind-hearted Mr Tumnus, meet a pair of resourceful talking beavers and stand alongside Aslan, the majestic lion, in the battle against the ruthless White Witch.

The staging is nothing short of brilliant. Actors double as set pieces, holding props and using lighting effects that create fluid transitions between scenes. The train ride to Scotland is cleverly simulated through puppetry as is the professor’s exasperated cat, Schrödinger. Snow really falls on stage, adding an extra layer of magic that makes Narnia feel all the more real with real gasps heard from many children in the audience.

Costumes are a feast for the eyes, perfectly capturing the seasonal shifts of the story. Aslan’s coat is an exquisite piece that adds to Stanton Wright’s commanding presence as the noble lion. His performance, combined with breathtaking puppetry, makes Aslan truly majestic.
Katy Stephens is mesmerising as the White Witch, exuding power and menace with every move. Her impressive Shakespearean background shines through, making her a formidable villain.

Ed Thorpe as Mr Beaver delivers warmth and humour, his rich voice bringing the character to life. Alfie Richards charms as Mr Tumnus, capturing the faun’s mix of nervousness and kindness perfectly.
The cast’s talent goes beyond acting with many also playing instruments live on stage. Music weaves seamlessly through the production, heightening emotions and keeping the energy high.

This production is a masterclass in theatrical storytelling. A fusion of puppetry, music, clever staging and stunning visuals makes for an unforgettable experience. The magic of Narnia is alive and well at Theatre Royal Brighton, leaving audiences spellbound and eager to return through the wardrobe once more.
