Review: Live at Brighton Dome

Live at Brighton Dome, Brighton Dome Comedy Festival
Saturday 26th October 2024

Live at Brighton Dome was a comedy night packed with laughs and surprises, all part of the Brighton Dome Comedy Festival.

The evening kicked off with a bang, thanks to host Rachel Fairburn who shone (literally!) in a dazzling sequin jumpsuit. Her quick wit and playful jabs at the North-South divide got the audience laughing from the get-go.

Rachel’s warm and lively style, along with some top-notch audience participation, had the crowd in the palm of her hand throughout the night as she introduced each act. To be honest, she almost stole the show.

Live at Brighton Dome’s first act was amazing with a performance from the 60-piece choir, Jam Tarts. They delivered a side-splitting rendition of Modern Toss’s Periodic Table of Swearing. It was a bit of a departure from their usual sound, blending Baroque-style singing with some very colourful language. Definitely not a set for the easily offended, but it was absolutely hilarious and set the tone for a night of daring comedy.

Laura Smyth was the next comic to take the stage, diving straight into tales of life in your 40s. From parenting struggles to the joys of marriage and menopause, her blunt style had everyone chuckling, especially when she shut down a cheeky heckler without missing a beat.

Then it was Phil Kay’s turn, a Scottish comic with a musical edge. His set was full of quirky moments, though the slightly off-the-cuff style left the crowd divided. Some loved the improvised feel, others weren’t quite sure what to make of the deliberate awkwardness.

Jamali Maddix followed with rapid-fire jokes and plenty of audience interaction, lifting the energy in the room. He kept everyone on their toes with quick, cutting humour that hit all the right notes.

Closing the night was Sara Pascoe, who lived up to her headline status. The star of BBC sitcom Out of Her Mind, her own stand-up special LadsLadsLads and host of Sewing Bee was a true professional and got a fantastic response from the crowd. With her laid-back yet quick-fire delivery, she shared hilarious insights into being a new mum and blazed effortlessly through a range of topics in her typical bouncy style.

It was the perfect end to the evening with laughs coming fast and furious from start to finish.
