David Walliams’ fun family adventure, Awful Auntie, is making its way to the Theatre Royal Brighton this October. Running from Thursday 10th to Saturday 12th October 2024, this production is the latest collaboration between the bestselling children’s author and the award-winning Birmingham Stage Company (BSC). The two have previously teamed up for other successful adaptations, including the Oliver Award-nominated Gangsta Granny and Billionaire Boy.
The story follows young Stella, who embarks on an exciting trip to London with her parents, completely unaware that danger lurks around the corner. When she wakes up three months later, the only person able to fill in the gaps is her Aunt Alberta. However, it quickly becomes clear that not everything Aunt Alberta says can be trusted, and Stella finds herself caught in a gripping battle against her not-so-adoring relative.

David Walliams expressed his excitement about the production. He said: “The BSC’s live shows of my books are always brilliant. I can’t wait for the fun to begin again. It’s going to be a hoot!”
As a well-known comedian and television personality, Walliams first gained fame with the hit series Little Britain, created alongside Matt Lucas. This iconic show won numerous international awards, including three BAFTAs, and was broadcast in over 100 countries. Following that success, Walliams starred in Come Fly With Me, one of the most-watched comedies of all time, and he was a judge on Britain’s Got Talent for a decade, earning multiple National Television Awards for Best TV Judge. His career as a children’s author began in 2008, and he has since published a number of bestsellers translated into 55 languages, selling over 53 million copies worldwide.

Awful Auntie is adapted and directed by Neal Foster, who is taking on the title role for the first time. As the Actor/Manager of The Birmingham Stage Company, he has played a vital role in the company’s success over the past three decades. Since its founding in 1992, BSC has produced over one hundred productions, solidifying its status as one of the world’s leading producers of theatre for children and families.
With its mix of adventure, humour, and engaging storytelling, Awful Auntie promises to be a charming addition to the Theatre Royal Brighton’s lineup. As the show approaches, excitement is building among fans of David Walliams and theatre lovers alike.
