A thrilling new stage adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula is set to tour the UK in 2024/25, with Blackeyed Theatre bringing their unique take on the gothic classic to the stage. Worthing’s Connaught Theatre will host the production from Thursday 23rd to Saturday 25th January 2025, offering audiences a chance to experience one of the most iconic horror tales of all time in an electrifying theatrical setting.

Adapted by Nick Lane, this version of Dracula transports audiences back to 1897, a time of great societal and technological change. As the world stands on the brink of the modern era, a new and terrifying threat emerges from the shadows, one that challenges the very fabric of reality and morality. At the heart of this story is a small group of young men and women, led by the determined Professor Van Helsing, fighting to stop the sinister Count Dracula from wreaking havoc on England.
Blackeyed Theatre is known for its innovative and ensemble-driven performances and Dracula promises to be no exception. The production blends the Victorian gothic atmosphere with contemporary theatrical techniques, creating a fresh take on the legendary story while remaining true to its dark, eerie roots. Expect a haunting soundscape, evocative design and a powerhouse cast that will bring Stoker’s chilling narrative to life.

The cast for this production is packed with talent. Maya-Nika Bewley, who received an Offie nomination for Locomotive for Murder: The Improvised Whodunnit, takes on the dual roles of Mina Harker and Dr Hennessey. David Chafer, known for his performances in The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde and The Importance of Being Earnest, will be embodying both Professor Abraham Van Helsing and the notorious Count Dracula. Richard Keightley, who has worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre, also shares the role of Count Dracula while playing Dr John Seward.
Joining them is Pelé Kelland-Beau as Jonathan Harker and Quincey Morris, Marie Osman as Lucy Westenra and Renfield and Harry Rundle, who appeared in Harry Potter & The Cursed Child, taking on the roles of Arthur Holmwood and Count Dracula. This ensemble cast brings a range of experience across stage and screen, ensuring a gripping and dynamic portrayal of this classic horror story.

Writer and Director Nick Lane said: “I’m always excited to work with Blackeyed Theatre, and Dracula is such a cracking work – tense, dense and dripping with menace. I wanted to tell the classic story, but also to try and explore certain elements within it in a slightly different way. When you blend the familiar and the strange, as we did with Jekyll & Hyde and more recently the Sherlock adaptation ‘The Valley of Fear,’ what you’re hoping is that the fans of the story – whether in book, film or TV form – feel you’ve done Bram Stoker justice, while those that are coming to Dracula with no preconceptions are drawn in by the mystery of who Count Dracula is. And of course, ultimately you want to give everyone a great night out.”
Artistic Director of Blackeyed Theatre, Adrian McDougall said: “2024 marks Blackeyed Theatre’s 20th birthday and what better way to celebrate than with Bram Stoker’s classic! Dracula gives audiences a little bit of everything and really encapsulates what Blackeyed Theatre is all about – telling fantastic stories with passion, originality and unashamed theatricality. And I’m proud that it furthers our mission to help ensure regional audiences get choice when it comes to high-quality theatre.”

Audiences in Worthing are in for a treat as Dracula sweeps into town next January. Whether you’re a fan of the original novel or new to the story, this production promises an immersive, spine-tingling experience that will stay with you long after the final curtain falls.
