Last Chance to Visit Arundel Castle This Year

As autumn draws to a close, Arundel Castle is preparing to shut its doors for the winter with the final chance to visit coming on Sunday 3rd November 2024. If you haven’t had the opportunity to explore this historic site yet, now’s the time to make plans. With just a few weeks left before its seasonal closure, Arundel Castle is offering a unique blend of activities, events and exhibitions that are perfect for a day out before winter sets in.

Castle Manager, Andrew Lewis said: “Autumn at Arundel Castle is an extraordinary time. As we approach the final weeks of the 2024 season, we invite visitors to savour the beauty of this historic landmark one last time before the castle closes. Whether it’s a walk through the vibrant gardens or a visit to our special events or exhibitions, there’s something magical about this season that we encourage everyone to experience.”

Running until Tuesday 8th October, the Household Cavalry Exhibition offers visitors a rare chance to admire striking, large-scale portraits by photographer Ripley. The exhibition features members of the Life Guards and The Blues and Royals, two of the oldest and most prestigious regiments in the British Army, mounted and posed against iconic London backdrops. It’s an impressive display of military history, honouring the ceremonial roles of these regiments.

From 29th October to 2nd November, Arundel Castle’s much-loved History Man will be offering interactive, character-led tours around the grounds. This resident expert, in full period costume, brings the history of the castle to life with engaging stories, vivid anecdotes and in-depth knowledge of Arundel’s long and fascinating past.

If you’re visiting during the half-term break, there’s even more in store. On Wednesday 30th and Thursday 31st October, Arundel Castle will be hosting a special Characters from History event. Crusaders, knights and archers will roam the grounds, sharing stories about their lives and the medieval world they inhabited. The event will also feature a falconry display, traditional medieval music, demonstrations and historical crafts and weaponry, archery lessons (for anyone aged 8+) and a storyteller who will regale visitors with ancient tales.

As the autumn colours reach their peak, Arundel Castle’s gardens offer a perfect escape into nature. Highlights include the kitchen garden, bursting with seasonal produce and the tropical borders, which are still holding onto their late-summer vibrancy. The Collector Earl’s Garden, a tribute to Thomas Howard, the 14th Earl of Arundel, remains a visitor favourite.

For those who like their history with a view, a climb to the top of the castle’s keep offers breathtaking, panoramic vistas of the Sussex countryside. Autumn is a particularly gorgeous time of year to enjoy the scenery, with the rolling hills awash in golds, reds and oranges. From up high, visitors can see the full expanse of the castle’s grounds as well as the picturesque town of Arundel below.

Inside the castle, visitors can take in the impressive collection of art and antiquities. Arundel Castle boasts works by celebrated artists like Van Dyck and Gainsborough, as well as an array of historical furniture and artefacts that span centuries. This is a must-see for art lovers or those keen to explore the cultural treasures housed within the castle’s walls. The grandeur of the rooms, combined with the rich history that permeates every corner, makes this a highlight for many visitors.

After exploring the grounds, exhibitions and history, there’s no better way to wrap up your visit than by enjoying a meal in the Castle Cafe. The new autumn menu features hearty dishes such as Traditional Lasagne made with Norfolk Estate and local beef, topped with Arundel herbs and Sussex cheese. Of course, no visit to Arundel Castle would be complete without trying the famous homemade scones or indulging in a range of freshly made sandwiches and cakes.
